Editor's Comment

This newsletter marks the beginning of a new phase in NHNE's work. It also marks a return to our beginnings. 13 years ago, when NHNE was first poking its nose into the world, the web had yet to emerge as a global superpower. In those days, before websites and web browsers had emerged from the primorial ooze, there was email. And email, via American Online, was where we first appeared. The net was so devoid of life in those early days that our first newsletters mention very few websites. Can you image that? No Googles, YouTubes, Wikipedias, blogs, or cyber reporters? And only a handful of exotic creatures (NHNE among them) with funky, clunky, hand-coded websites?

The name of our first publication was, fittingly, "The NHNE News Brief". It eventually gave birth to a faster way to keep up with the growing tidal wave of information -- sending information out one piece at a time as soon as it appeared. But while this proved to be an effective way to keep the news junkies among us happy, the daily onslaught of email was too much for many fans of NHNE.

With the resurrection of NHNE's News Brief, we aim to restore balance (and choice) to the universe. If you like bite-sized summaries, you can subscribe to NHNE News Brief. If, on the other hand, you prefer a daily dose of fast-breaking, content-rich email, you can subscribe to NHNE's Wavemaker List. Take your pick. Or pick both.

And mailing lists are not the only things NHNE is offering these days. We also have a dynamic mother ship and a dazzling web 2.0 community, both of which will be regularly showcased in our resurrected News Brief.

Having watched (and to a very small degree, helped) the internet become the extraordinary, nearly omnipresent force it is today, one of the things that amazes me the most is that NHNE is still here, alive and kicking, when so many other groups have become compost. What's our secret? That would be you, of course -- a rabid bunch of fans that continues to think we're providing a valuable service to the world, or at least to our small corner of it.

What can you do to help? Simple. Forward copies of this News Brief to others. Join NHNE's Online Community. Become a Wavemaker Subscriber. Make a tax-deductible donation.

And we, in turn, will do everything we can to continue to provide you with news, inspiration, and connections with others of like mind who can keep your heart ticking, brain cells firing, and infuse your life with greater meaning.

With Love & Best Wishes,
David Sunfellow

>> MYSTERY MEAT MACROPHOTOGRAPHY - Yesterday I posted shocking macrophotography pictures of processed meat products. Since then, over a quarter of a million people have viewed the photos in the first 24 hours, and word has spread all over the internet about these sick, graphic images of processed meats. I've already received numerous complaints of people vomiting (I'm not kidding)! More importantly, however, I've also received many comments from people who say they are no longer going to eat processed meat products at all.

>> "REDACTED" STUNS VENICE - A new film about the real-life rape and killing of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl by U.S. soldiers who also murdered her family stunned the Venice festival, with shocking images that left some viewers in tears.

>> GLOBAL WARMING TO RESURRECT EIGHT-MILLION-YEAR-OLD ORGANISMS - An 8-million-year-old bacterium that was extracted from the oldest known ice on Earth is now growing in a laboratory, claim researchers. If confirmed, this means ancient bacteria and viruses will come back to life as ice melts due to global warming. This is nothing to worry about, say experts, because the process has been going on for billions of years and the bugs are unlikely to cause human disease.

>> THE KENSINGTON RUNESTONE - It's one of Minnesota's greatest mysteries. It's something that puts settlers in America well before Columbus. A Minnesota geologist thinks the controversial Kensington Runestone is the real thing and there is evidence that he says backs up the theory.

TOYOTA & HONDA HYBRID WAR - Peter Kessner, a devout environmentalist, bought a Honda Civic hybrid four years ago to show everyone that he wants to save the planet. The only problem: no one noticed, since, other than the hybrid badge on the trunk, it looked like a regular Civic. So he traded it in for a Toyota Prius. Suddenly, strangers began stopping him on the street to ask about his hybrid, with its space-age styling and miserly mileage.

>> GREEN CONFESSIONS - Forgotten to recycle any newspapers or tin cans recently? Feeling guilty because you neglected to carbon offset your flight to somewhere, anywhere, outside England this summer? The Roman Catholic Church is at hand with a new line in “green confessions” to help eco-sinners to find forgiveness.

>> FOLLOWUP: U.S. OPPOSITION LEADERS WARN OF POTENTIAL 9/11-LIKE ATTACK - The controversy continues with this Warning, and visitors to and users of 911blogger.com should know that there are accusations of a hoax and misrepresentation surrounding this document.

>> ONLY TEN MINUTES ON A MOBILE COULD TRIGGER CANCER - Mobile phones can take as little as ten minutes to trigger changes in the brain associated with cancer, scientists claimed yesterday.

CHRIST-LIKE BIN LADEN IMAGE STIRS DEBATE IN AUSTRALIA - Artworks depicting Osama bin Laden in a Christ-like pose and a statue of the Virgin Mary covered in a burqa have caused a stir in Australia after they were showcased in a prestigious religious art competition.

>> NORTH POLE ICECAP MELTS AS GLOBAL WARMING INCREASES - The North Pole is melting for the first time in 55m years. Researchers have found that the icecap at the top of the world has turned into a mile-wide patch of open ocean.

WATER VAPOR SEEN 'RAINING DOWN' ON YOUNG STAR SYSTEM - NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has detected enough water vapor to fill the oceans on Earth five times inside the collapsing nest of a forming star system. Astronomers say the water vapor is pouring down from the system's natal cloud and smacking into a dusty disk where planets are thought to form.

>> U.S. OPPOSITION LEADERS WARN OF POTENTIAL 9/11-LIKE ATTACK - A group of former government officials along with current Congressional candidates, authors and activists has issued an urgent warning that a faction of the US government allied with Dick Cheney is planning to stage a terror event or provocation as a pretext for launching military attacks against Iran and implementing emergency powers in America.

>>>> SAM HARRIS: THE SACRIFICE OF REASON - Humanity has had a long fascination with blood sacrifice. In fact, it has been by no means uncommon for a child to be born into this world only to be patiently and lovingly reared by religious maniacs who believe that the best way to keep the sun on its course or to ensure a rich harvest is to lead him by tender hand into a field or to a mountaintop and bury, butcher, or burn him alive as offering to an invisible (and almost certainly fictional) God.

>> GREENWASHING 'ECO-FRIENDLY' COMPANIES - Finding out which companies are truly eco-friendly can be tricky. Many are keen to assert a 'green' agenda by peppering annual reports with buzz words such as 'environmental' and 'sustainable'. But look closer and you will find these documents often contain much useful information that can help you to assess how squeaky clean a company really is.

>> OCEANS ARE LIKELY TO KEEP RISING 'FOR MANY CENTURIES' - The report reiterates best estimates that temperatures will rise by 1.8 to 4.0 Celsius (3 to 7 Fahrenheit) this century and that sea levels will rise by between 18 and 59 centimetres. But it says ocean levels are likely to keep rising "for many centuries" even if greenhouse gases are stabilised, because water expands as it heats up. The deep oceans will keep heating up as warmth filters down from the surface.

>> MORE IRAQIS FLEE AS FIGURE TOPS FOUR MILLION - More than four million Iraqis have fled their homes because of sectarian violence, the largest population movement in the Middle East since Palestinians left the new state of Israel, the United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday.

>> GREENHOUSE GASES FUELED 2006 US WARMTH -Greenhouse gas emissions -- not El Nino or other natural phenomena -- pushed US temperatures for 2006 close to a record high, government climate scientists reported on Tuesday.

PATHOLOGIST: DOCTOR KILLED BEETHOVEN - Did someone kill Beethoven? A Viennese pathologist claims the composer's physician did -- inadvertently overdosing him with lead in a case of a cure that went wrong.

100-YEAR-OLD CELEBRATES HER BIRTHDAY BY SMOKING 170,000TH CIGARETTE - An iron-lunged pensioner has celebrated her 100th birthday by lighting up her 170,000th cigerette from a candle on her birthday cake.

>> ASTONISHING TOWER COLLAPSE SCREAMS "NO NEW NUKES!!" - A cooling tower at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power plant has collapsed. A broken 54" pipe there has spewed 350,000 gallons per minute of contaminated, overheated water into the Earth. "The river water piping and the series of screens and supports failed," said a company spokesman. They "fell to the ground."

>> MOVIE TO BE MADE ON GAUTAMA BUDDHA'S LIFE - An historical epic is to be filmed about the life and teachings of the Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, a South Asian production team said Monday.

>> U.S. MOST ARMED COUNTRY WITH 90 GUNS PER 100 PEOPLE - The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.

>> THE FUTURE OF THE WORKPLACE: NO OFFICE, HEADQUARTERS IN CYBERSPACE - Imagine a work world with no commute, no corporate headquarters and perhaps not even an office in the physical world at all.

STUDY FINDS VIAGRA INCREASES RELEASE OF 'LOVE HORMONE' - Researchers have found that Viagra stimulates production of oxytocin, the so-called "love hormone" or "cuddle chemical.” It's the first indication of a chemical mechanism through which impotence drugs may have physical effects besides increasing blood flow to sexual organs, says Meyer Jackson, a physiology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health.

>> HOW SLEEP WORKS - If you have ever wondered about why people have to sleep or what causes dreams, then read on. In this article, you'll find out all about sleep and what it does for you.

The mission of NewHeavenNewEarth (NHNE) is to answer humankind's oldest, most perplexing questions: Who are we? Why are we here? Where are we headed? What is the origin and purpose of life?

Instead of relying on ancient or contemporary wisdom, or the knowledge of isolated experts, we are building a global network of seekers from all walks of life, from all parts of the world, lay people and professionals alike, that can pool talents, experience, and resources to unravel life's great mysteries.

We also believe that our planet is passing through a time of profound change and are seeking to create a global community of like-minded people that can safely pass through whatever changes may come our way and help give birth to a new way of life on our planet.

If these purposes speak to you, we invite you to join us!
