>> ARE U.S. TROOPS BEING FORCE-FED CHRISTIANITY? - For Mr. Weinstein -- a former Air Force judge advocate and assistant counsel in the Reagan White House -- charges that several incidents in recent years point to a growing willingness inside the military to support a particular brand of Christianity and to permit improper evangelizing in the ranks. More than 95 percent of those complaints come from other Christians, he says.

UC BERKELEY FIRST TO POST FULL LECTURES TO YOUTUBE - YouTube is now an important teaching tool at UC Berkeley. The school announced on Wednesday that it has begun posting entire course lectures on the Web's No.1 video-sharing site.

THE DARK SIDE OF 'FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS' - To some, it may seem like an ideal relationship, less stressful than an affair, longer lived than a fling or that elusive one-night stand. Yet relationships in which close friends begin having sex come with their own brand of awkwardness, according to the first study to explore the dynamics of such pairs, often called friends with benefits, or F.W.B..

>> CHINA MAY WIN NEW SPACE RACE - The Soviets beat the United States at getting a satellite, and a man, into space. Now, the Chinese may get to the moon before the U.S. can make a return visit.

>> PARENTS BLAME EXOTIC HALLUCINOGENIC FOR SON'S SUICIDE - "Our system of time has no meaning and is completely pointless in the grand scheme of things. Also, our existence in general is pointless compared with everything else there is in the universe. Us, Earth, and humans are nothing." -- From Brett Chidester's journal, written before he committed suicide. Brett's mother believes the little known hallucinogenic her 17-year-old son was taking was reshaping his mind and perception of reality.

SECESSIONISTS MEETING IN TENNESSEE - Separated by hundreds of miles and divergent political philosophies, the Middlebury Institute and the League of the South are hosting a two-day Secessionist Convention starting Wednesday in Chattanooga. They expect to attract supporters from California, Alaska and Hawaii, inviting anyone who wants to dissolve the Union so states can save themselves from an overbearing federal government.

>> 'GREEN ROOFS' COULD COOL WARMING CITIES - Covering city buildings in vegetation -- creating “green roofs” and walls -- could substantially save energy by reducing the need for air conditioning on hot days, say researchers.

The more destruction, the easier the makeover.

"We hear about Vietnam and Cambodia and this was more horrific."

>> ARCTIC MELT UNNERVES THE EXPERTS (INCLUDES GRAPHICS) - The Arctic ice cap shrank so much this summer that waves briefly lapped along two long-imagined Arctic shipping routes, the Northwest Passage over Canada and the Northern Sea Route over Russia. Scientists are unnerved by the summer’s implications for the future, and their ability to predict it.

>> EUROPEANS ANGRY AFTER BUSH CLIMATE SPEECH 'CHARADE' - George Bush was castigated by European diplomats and found himself isolated yesterday after a special conference on climate change ended without any progress. >> THE SWIFT-BOATING OF JAMES HANSEN - On September 22, 2007 an article by Doug Ware of KUTV.com called "Global Warming Scientist Once Warned Of 'Ice Age' " began making the rounds. The heart of the story was that famed scientist James Hansen had warned in 1971 of "a modern day ice age, which would cause the planet's temperature to plummet as many as six degrees". Did the reporter get his facts right, or did he do a hatchet job on James Hansen? Apparently the latter. What follows is Hansen's response to Ware's article.

>> FOLLOWUP 1: KIVA: MY PEOPLES, YOUR PEOPLES, OUR PEOPLES - After sending out the message [about Kiva], I heard back, almost immediately, from other NHNEers who decided to join Kiva and help folks in third world countries. And it occurred to me it would be fun to create a web page for those of us who have decided to lend a hand. Along with helping create a sense of community -- that we are all working on a project together -- it would also give us a chance, at a glance, to see how many other NHNEers are participating and who all the folks are that are benefiting from our efforts.

>>>> KIVA: AN INNOVATIVE WAY TO HELP PEOPLE IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES - You can go to Kiva's website and lend to someone in the developing world who needs a loan for their business -- like raising goats, selling vegetables at market or making bricks. Each loan has a picture of the entrepreneur, a description of their business and how they plan to use the loan so you know exactly how your money is being spent -- and you get updates letting you know how the business is going. The best part is, when the entrepreneur pays back their loan you get your money back -- and Kiva's loans are managed by microfinance institutions on the ground who have a lot of experience doing this, so you can trust that your money is being handled responsibly.

>> CLINTON INITIATIVE INSPIRES UTILITIES, BANK TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING - Today in New York, the opening day of the third annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, CGI, brought together some 1,000 leaders of business, government and nongovernmental organizations from over 70 countries, including 52 current and former heads of state, who made commitments focusing on the Initiative's four focus areas: education, energy and climate change, global health and poverty alleviation.

The Inspiring (& Amazing) Story Of Ray Anderson

Interface, Inc. CEO Ray C. Anderson has been called the "greenest chief executive in America." By combining environmentalism with dedication to his company's success, Anderson has proven that being green can also bring in the green for big business. When Anderson started Interface, Inc., in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1973, he wasn't concerned about the environment. "I just wanted to survive," Anderson recalled. "I never gave one thought to what we were doing to the earth." Then Anderson read Paul Hawkens' book, "The Ecology of Commerce". The book suggested that industry was systematically destroying the planet, and the only people in a position to stop the destruction were the industrialists themselves. The book's argument spun Anderson's perspective 180 degrees. "It was like a spear to the chest," he said of Hawkens' book. Almost immediately, he began to turn Interface, Inc. into an environmentally-friendly enterprise.

quote
"It was one of the worst days in my life: the washing machine broke down, the telephone kept ringing, my head ached, and the mail carrier brought a bill I had no money to pay. Almost to the breaking point, I lifted my one-year-old into his high chair, leaned my head against the tray, and began to cry. Without a word, my son took his pacifier out of his mouth and stuck it in mine."

-- Clara Null, from "Humor for Preaching and Teaching"

The mission of NewHeavenNewEarth (NHNE) is to answer humankind's oldest, most perplexing questions: Who are we? Why are we here? Where are we headed? What is the origin and purpose of life?

Instead of relying on ancient or contemporary wisdom, or the knowledge of isolated experts, we are building a global network of seekers from all walks of life, from all parts of the world, lay people and professionals alike, that can pool talents, experience, and resources to unravel life's great mysteries.

We also believe that our planet is passing through a time of profound change and are seeking to create a global community of like-minded people that can safely pass through whatever changes may come our way and help give birth to a new way of life on our planet.

If these purposes speak to you, we invite you to join us!
