Introduction

When I first started interviewing people in the British crop circle community, I realized that it was futile to only speak with researchers, because this phenomena has affected so many people's lives. And though some of the members of the crop circle community would have preferred that I not speak to other members, I politely, occasionally rudely, ignored their requests.

I was told by many people prior to leaving for England to follow my intuition. I also have a background in hard science. I ended up using both. My intuition, which I sometimes ignored in life, came in loud and clear, while my background in science helped me sort through the often dubious paranormal claims and scientific methods.

I spoke with musicians, artists, farmers, researchers, hoaxers, and just plain old interested folks. I did not get to meet or interview everyone I would have liked to, but I tried to sample as many different opinions and ideas as I could. I also had no intention of solving this mystery. My intention was to meet as many people involved in the crop circle scene as I could and experience the phenomenon first hand. In the process, I discovered what is posted on the Internet and widely circulated in the alternative press and what actually happens in a summer in Wiltshire are vastly different. Most information on crop circles is, in other words, a polished mirage: when you finally arrive in Britain, there is something to be seen, but it doesn't look the way it did from afar.

I realize that many of you will have questions and criticisms of my work. I will do my best to respond to whatever questions and comments you may have (see the letters section of this website). In return, I ask that you take the time to read and absorb my entire report. What began as a simple investigation to determine if crop circles are of human or paranormal origin, became an adventure into my own spirit and the peculiar, often messy and unflattering, social dynamics associated with anomalous events...
